The Internet Show Indonesia 2012

The organiser claimed that the event is “Indonesia’s only internet business event”. Although it’s not quite true, since a lot of similar events in the past 3 years, it was a good event, great speakers, useful insights, and I’m very happy to be part of it.

I had a opportunity to be a speaker in a panel session talking about “Making Waves in Social Media in Indonesia”. The panel basically discussed social media waves in Indonesia, how to be part of it, and how to monetize out of social media services in Indonesia market. Actually, I prepared presentation slides, even though I’m not allowed to present it in front of audience due to time limitation and the form of panel discussion that’s supposed to be interactive with the audience, instead of showing the slides. Well, I’ll share it here anyway:

Insights

Although I spoke on the event, I didn’t missed out the opportunity to attend some great presentations from other speakers. I’ll share some data and insights of those presentations.

Let’s start with the interesting internet-related facts in Indonesia:

  • Total population: 237,556,363
  • Internet users: 39,600,000
  • Users on the top social networks: 40,829,720
  • Mobile subscribers: 210,391,300

Quite interesting, isn’t it? Internet users number is lower than the users of social networks (which off course they use internet to access them). Well, that’s because the rest are accessing the social networks through mobile devices, that’s not really categorised as registered internet subscribers. Most of them meet the internet for the first time via mobile devices, instead of PC.

80% of users use their phone to search stuffs, but of 69% actually went on to purchase stuffs.

What are the reasons that motivate the users to purchase via their mobile? Convenience and entertainment are the key reasons, which are 26% and 25% respectively. Others:

  • 17% due to the advertising prompted to the users
  • 17% due to minimal waiting time
  • and 15% of users do purchase because of boredom :)

There’s overall global increase in the number of mobile content and commerce users between 2011 and 2012. Indonesia has increased 5% this year, from 80% in 2011 to 85% in 2012. So we better of take advantage out of it.

That’s some I can share. The rest, you have to attend the event :)
